About Austin, Texas



Located in heart of the great state of Texas, this capital city is on the eastern edge of the American Southwest and in the middle of the Texas Hill Country. It is the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 15th-largest in the United States. It was the third-fastest-growing large city in the nation from 2000 to 2006. The city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Area, with a population of 1,652,602 as of the July 2008 U.S. Census estimate—making it the 36th-largest- and 2nd-fastest-growing metropolitan area in the nation. Austin’s history is peppered with colorful and heroic stories that help make Austin one of a kind.

Austin is one of the top cities in the country and there are many reasons to live in Austin. “I wasn’t born in Austin, but I got here as fast as I could” is the mindset of a great many, as the city has become a popular destination for transplants across the nation. This refers to in part to the progressive and eclectic lifestyle of many Austin residents, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist excessive commercialization.

The main campus of the University of Texas is located in Austin. While UT and the business of running the state have long been driving economical forces, Austin economy is strong and dynamic, driven by high tech. The city is home to enough major technology corporations to have earned it the nickname "Silicon Hills." There is a diverse mix of university professors and students, politicians and state employees, high-tech and white-collar workers, to blue-collar, musicians and artists. There are all manners of jobs in Austin.

Austin is also a hot bed for fun things to do. It helps that Austin gets 300 plus days for sunshine per year. On any given weekend, you will find a festival, outdoor concert, arts and crafts fair, water event, or other planned Austin special event.
