Tips for Moving Out of Your Apartment

So, the time has come to move out. There are some important things you should know and be aware of. It is important to understand your lease and the procedures for moving out.

End of My Lease :

It is important to know the terms of your lease. If you have completed the last month of your lease, do not assume that you can just pack up and leave. Most properties require a notice to vacate. This is usually 30 to 60 days before the end of your lease. Properties are sticklers for this detail. There may be fees or other penalties involved if you do not follow the rules of the lease. It is ultimately your responsibility to know your lease. If the property “forgets” to notify that your lease is expiring, that is still no excuse to fail to give proper notice. A proper notice to vacate is always given in writing. You should have the manager sign it and provide you with a copy.

Final Walk Through :

A move out check list should be obtained from the property. This will give you a clear idea of what the property expects as far as move out condition. So, you have properly cleaned your apartment after removing your belongings. Arrange for a property representative to walk through the apartment with you. Have the check list in hand. Make sure any discrepancies are resolved before you turn in the keys. This is your last chance to clean up a spot you missed or dust off that ceiling fan you forgot about. If not, the property can charge you for cleaning up after you. Be sure and understand your obligations about the move out condition of your apartment. This may save you from unnecessary fees.

Security Deposit :

You may have had to put a deposit on your apartment. This is to protect the property against damages. A final walk through will help you to get your deposit back, if you have done a proper job in cleaning and there are no major damages. Consult your lease agreement to see what the deposit was and how much of it are you eligible for return.

Break a Lease :

There are circumstances that arise that require people to break a lease. It may be a job transfer, a family emergency, etc. In some occasions, the residence may be unlivable. Whatever the reason, if you have to break a lease, you must know how the process works properly. Consult your rental agreement. This is the contract you signed before moving in. It will have details on how to break a lease. There are usually some fees involved and proper notices must be give. Speak with the manager to clear up any confusion. But, be clear on this fact. A mishandled lease termination can severely damage your credit rating and make renting another apartment very difficult.
